Council seeking new legal opinion on Westhaven
Auckland City has invited former Prime Minister and law professor Sir Geoffrey Palmer to provide a definitive legal opinion on whether the people of Auckland could have Westhaven Marina transferred back to them at no cost.
This follows the council’s announcement last week that it would participate in the tender process for Westhaven and Hobson West Marinas which is now underway.
“We are going to take a guiding hand in the waterfront’s development,” said Councillor Scott Milne, chair of the council’s Waterfront Working Party. “However before we commit to tendering for the marinas we need to have clarity beyond any doubt that this is the correct option to secure this area for the public.”
Sir Geoffrey has been asked to prepare his legal opinion for the council as soon as possible so that this matter can be resolved promptly.
