Takapu Track open to view Fresh air

Takapu Track open to view Fresh air, sweeping views and bushclad valleys – and opening this weekend.

This Sunday 29 February, Mana MP Winnie Laban and Greater Wellington Chairperson Margaret Shields are to officially open the Takapu Track in Belmont Regional Park. Running from Takapu Road to the Cannons Creek Lakes Reserve, this new track crosses the Friends of Maara Roa forest restoration project, and gives magnificent views over Porirua Harbour. For the first time, visitors will be able to do a loop walk around the farmland, remnant forest and regenerating bush in this little known corner of the park.

“The Friends of Maara Roa have done an outstanding job in restoring the natural environment in the Cannons Creek Valley. The Takapu Track opening is a great opportunity to explore the valley and imagine how it will look as their project develops,” says Greater Wellington’s landcare committee chairman Chris Laidlaw.

Greater Wellington and the Friends of Maara Roa invite members of the public to help them celebrate the opening of the new track from 1pm. Visitors can choose from a variety of guided walks for all levels of fitness and ability. Wear strong footwear and bring warm clothing and a drink. Refreshments will be available for a gold coin donation, to raise funds for the forest restoration project.
