Forest and Bird objects to destruction of totara trees

A local Whangarei organisation, the Whangarei Native Forest and Bird Protection Society has been reported in the media today for supporting the clearance of totara in Northland. Please note that this organisation is neither the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society of New Zealand Inc. (Forest and Bird) nor is it a constituent body of Forest and Bird.

The Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society (Forest and Bird) is OPPOSED to the felling of totara trees referred to in the news and urges journalists to ensure that their coverage of the story does not generate confusion or unwarranted harm to the reputation of Forest and Bird.

"Forest and Bird is very concerned at the destruction of forest remnants in Northland. We are strongly opposed to the destruction of the totara trees that could have been over 100 years old. Totara is important food and habitat for native birds," said Forest and Bird northern field officer David Pattemore.
