Dog exercise areas in Auckland city

Auckland City has increased the number of designated dog exercise areas throughout the city from 81 to 128. The council has recently completed a review of the city’s dog exercise areas.

The review involved extensive discussion with community board members who conducted initial public consultation in their wards. From this, the boards presented recommendations to Auckland City officials who reviewed them and, after further consultation with the community boards, developed the new exercise areas.

Regular exercise is important for the health and wellbeing of any dog and can be beneficial when the dog can run without the restrictions of a leash.

In the designated dog exercise areas, leashes are not required but dogs must be under continuous surveillance and effective control by someone 16 years or over. Effective control means that the dog is not causing a nuisance or danger and that the person in charge of the dog is able to obtain an immediate and desired response from the dog by use of a leash, voice commands, hand signals, whistles or other similar means. In all other public areas, dogs must be kept on a leash.

Time restrictions have been applied to some dog exercise areas to allow varied use of that particular area. In the majority of cases where time restrictions have been applied, the areas are relatively small, contain a playground or form part of a school route.

When using these areas, dog owners should not forget to clean up after their dogs. Failure to do so may result in a fine.

Although not all of the new areas are sign-posted at this stage, dogs may be exercised without a leash in the areas on the list attached.
