Friends of Olympic Pool Swells to 100

Media Statement

Friends of Olympic Pool Swells to 100

Ninety individuals or families have become a Friend of the Olympic Pool Complex just two weeks after the idea was mooted.

“Within the first two days of the Friend’s existence over 50 members joined,” said Olympic Pool Complex Manager Hendrik Roos.

“I am confident we will soon reach our first benchmark of 100 members.”

Gisborne residents are being asked to become Friends of the Olympic Pool Complex in an effort to improve the facility, broaden ideas for the future, and attract additional funding.

Mr Roos said it was only normal people and organisations with a special interest in a particular community feature, come together and endeavour to improve it.

“I’m thrilled with the initial interest. This is a major opportunity to bring the pool into the 21st Century. The complex is 30 years old and modern trends are quite different to what they were in 1974 when it first started to be built.”

Mr Roos said the Friends concept was not a new idea, and had been proven to work - the Friends of Eastwoodhill was a prime example.

He said Friends of the Olympic Pool Complex can sign up as individuals, families, organisations or corporations.

Benefits for Friends, who pay small membership fees, have been proposed including discounted admission and purchases.

“However the biggest benefit will be that the community will be able to enjoy an improved pool complex with better facilities and services.”

Mayor Meng Foon, inaugural patron of the Friends of the Olympic Pool Complex Society, last week chaired a public meeting where the constitution for the Society was finalised.

“This is a fantastic concept and there is obviously some enthusiasm out there. The feedback so far, with nearly 100 members, is marvelous.”

Mr Roos said anyone interested in becoming a Friend of the Olympic Pool Complex is invited to pick up an information brochure from the Olympic Pool on Centennial Marine Drive, the HB Williams Memorial Library, Gisborne District Council office in Fitzherbert St, or by ringing (06) 867 6220 for one to be sent out.

“The next step will be the first Annual General Meeting where a Friends of the Olympic Pool Committee will be nominated.”

Mr Roos said this meeting is expected to occur in June.
