Cathedral Square concept plan finalised

Cathedral Square concept plan finalised, work to start this month

A concept plan for road works in the north-west of Christchurch’s Cathedral Square has been approved by a special City Council committee. Design plans and tender documents are being finalised and staff hope work will begin later this month.

Some changes have been made to the partial two-way road design after city councillors heard the opinions of various groups and individuals. Among changes made are a special drop-off and pick-up bay for small tour buses outside the Visitor Centre and a two-vehicle goods vehicle bay on the south side of Worcester Street outside the Holy Grail. “We’re in negotiations with the contractor at the moment and hope to have work start at the Worcester Street end before the end of the month,” says project manager Ross Herrett.

“The weather plays an important role with any roading project, so it’s not possible to say for sure when a job will be completed. But, given the weather, we plan for the work to be completed by Show Weekend (12 November),” Mr Herrett says.
