ARC works with operator to continue ferry service

ARC works with operator to continue ferry service

Auckland Regional Council (ARC) has worked with Pine Harbour Holdings to ensure the weekday ferry service to and from Downtown Auckland will continue.

A contract, which involves the ARC subsidising the weekday Pine Harbour to Downtown Auckland timetable, will allow the ferry service to continue in the interim, while a competitive tender for operating it into the future can be undertaken.

While the peak time morning and afternoon service is very popular, the ARC is keen for the number of passengers travelling during the inter-peak period to increase significantly.

“This is a fast, efficient service into the CBD and with more users and a cost effective subsidy it can continue to operate and provide locals with an attractive choice of not always taking a car,” says Passenger Transport Committee Chairperson, Councillor Catherine Harland.

“Pine Harbour Holdings has invested a lot of time in developing an exceptional service. Free dedicated carparking with 24-hour security and a process whereby children 12 years and under, who are travelling unescorted, will only be dropped off into the care of a designated ‘pick up’ person, are initiatives that add to the appeal of the service,” says Cr Harland.

The Pine Harbour area is growing rapidly, with plans for new subdivisions and increasing numbers of residents.

“Convenient access to Auckland's CBD is vital for an area that has such huge potential for growth,” says ARC Councillor and Manukau area representative Bill Burrill.

“I’m sure many residents would rather spend 35 minutes on a comfortable ferry trip into town, than up to an hour or more in the car,” says Cr Burrill.

Pine Harbour Holdings will continue to operate Friday evening and weekend ferry services to Waiheke Island and Rakino Island without subsidy.

New timetables that include changes to departure times and the addition of two new Auckland services are being distributed to households in the Pine Harbour, Maraetai and Whitford area. Timetable information is also available by phoning Rideline on 366 6400 or going to the website http://www.rideline.co.nz ENDS
