Council composing script for theatre’s future

The Christchurch City Council is to consider all possible scenarios for the future of the St James/Odeon Theatre in Tuam Street.

Council has recruited Horwath Asia Pacific Ltd, a hotel, leisure and tourism consultancy, to investigate the feasibility of the theatre. It is hoped that Council staff will report back to the Arts, Culture and Heritage Committee in August.

“Horwath Asia will let us know if there is a place for the theatre in Christchurch and come back to us with details of what the costs would be,” says CCC Recreation and Community Policy Leader Alan Bywater.

“It is important for us identify how much use the theatre would get and not to jeopardise the viability of other theatres in the city.”

The St James/Odeon Theatre has seating for about 700 people.
