Have your say on the Nelson Quarter plan

Auckland City is calling for the public’s views on the future development of the Nelson Quarter.

“The Nelson Quarter is part of the Auckland’s CBD Into the future strategy to develop Auckland's CBD into one of the world's most vibrant and dynamic business and cultural centres,” says chairperson of the City Development Committee Councillor Juliet Yates.

“This distinct area is seen as the dynamic western fringe which will provide a diverse choice of inner city urban living and working opportunities,” she says.

One of the main aims of Auckland City’s CBD Into the future strategy is to achieve a high quality urban environment.

This consultation focuses on the Nelson Quarter which is bounded by Hobson, Union and Fanshawe streets including Victoria Park.

The council is seeking public input to help finalise the Nelson Quarter plan. One of a number of place based plans as part of Auckland’s CBD Into the future strategy.

“One of the key aspirations of the Nelson Quarter plan and any subsequent urban design concept plan will be to guide new developments to ensure good urban design and build on existing creative industry and residential trends,” says Auckland City senior planner Vijay Lala.

The CBD project seeks to achieve a high quality urban environment with distinctive quarters displaying good quality open space and streetscapes, quality social and community infrastructure and linkages between the quarters and other inner city suburbs.

“The Nelson Quarter is considered an area of unrealised potential,” says Mr Lala. “Introducing a structured urban design plan and design related guidelines will greatly enhance the overall look and feel of this inner city quarter.”

Aucklanders living and working in the Nelson Quarter are encouraged to put forward their views on developing this distinctive part of the city. An information pack has been developed and distributed to residents, businesses and building owners to facilitate participation in the further development of this quarter.

A public information workshop will be held at 7pm on Wednesday 28 July 2004 at the Town Hall reception lounge, Level 2, Queen Street, Auckland. This workshop will outline the key aspects of the quarter plan and urban design potential.

Feedback forms are available on the Auckland City Council website at www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/cbd. Return feedback forms to Auckland City Council by Friday 13 August 2004.
