Environmental heroes rewarded with awards

MEDIA RELEASE

Environmental heroes rewarded with awards

For immediate release: Thursday 29 July 2004

Some of the Bay of Plenty’s environmental heroes will soon be rewarded for their commitment, passion and hard work.

Environment Bay of Plenty’s Environmental awards open for nominations on Monday 2 August. They are designed to celebrate people, community groups and schools that are helping to improve and protect the region’s environment.

Awards coordinator Sheree Phillips says the region hosts dozens of community groups that carry out environmental work. Several educational organisations also have a strong environmental focus.

“Hundreds, if not thousands, of people are involved in a variety of fantastic projects all over the region,” she says. “They put their hearts into this work - mostly unpaid – and their contribution is invaluable. They deserve to be acknowledged and appreciated, which is what these awards are all about.”

Anyone can nominate a person or organisation for an award. ”You may have seen your local school or environmental group putting in the effort and think it deserves recognition,” Ms Phillips says. “You can also enter yourself.” However, she warns, nominations close on Friday 27 August so “don’t delay too long or you might miss out”.

Each category has up to three awards. Winners will receive a framed certificate and up to $1000.

For an application form contact Sheree Phillips on 0800 ENV BOP (368 267), email info@envbop.govt.nz, or check Environment Bay of Plenty’s website on www.envbop.govt.nz.
