Rescue underway for injured fisherman
A seriously injured crewman on board the fishing boat Aoraki will be left on the vessel until it reaches specialised medical care in Bluff. The Aoraki is currently about 550 kilometres south of New Zealand.
The crewman’s lower body has been caught in an auger, a large spiral machine which is used to process fish products.
A rescue helicopter has just arrived at the vessel, and has winched a paramedic on board to provide urgent medial aid to the crewman.
The Rescue Coordination Centre NZ estimates the Aoraki will take about 25 hours to reach Bluff.
An Airforce Orion will soon be launched from Whenuapai and will supply further medical supplies for the crewman.
Rescue Coordination Centre NZ Search and Rescue Officer Keith Allen says the crewman is still conscious and has been supported with oxygen and painkillers by a nurse.
“Paramedics have indicated that the safest way to assist the crewman is to wait until a specialised surgical team and hospital is available. Obviously, this must be a very difficult time for the family and friends of the man, while they wait until the boat arrives in Bluff. Everyone is working together to provide him with the best possible medical aid until that time,” he said.
