Chief Executive Appointed for ARTA

An experienced chief executive from Australia has been appointed the head of the Auckland Regional Transport Authority.

Alan Thompson, a former engineer and a long-standing public servant, is currently the Chief Executive of the Australian Capital Territory Department of Urban Services, and will take up his new role with ARTA later this year.
The ARTA Chair, Brian Roche, says Mr Thompson was appointed after an extensive and rigorous recruitment process, and was selected from a range of exceptional applicants.

“We searched widely to find the best candidate for this important position. Alan has many years experience as a chief executive in the public sector, and his outstanding performance in a variety of roles demonstrate excellent leadership skills, and an ability to manage a wide range of complex issues”.
“Alan is a proven performer with a high level of personal integrity, and I believe he will be an asset to ARTA as we tackle the challenges of getting Auckland moving”, says Mr Roche.

Mr Thompson has held several chief executive roles for Government organisations in Australia, including the ACT Chief Minister’s Department and the ACT Bushfire Recovery Taskforce, as well as the ACT Urban Services Department. He has also worked as Secretary to the Victoria Department of Justice and to the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

ARTA is an Auckland Regional Council subsidiary organisation that was set up under the Local Government Amendment Act, which became law on 1 July 2004.
It is responsible for the integrated planning, funding and implementation of all modes of transport throughout the Auckland Region.
ARTA will become fully operational around the end of the year, after an establishment period of several months.

Alan Thompson will take up his new role in November.
