Under One Week to Go

Monday 4th October sees 52,418 (26.4%) voting papers returned. This compares with 24.7% at the same stage for the 2001 election.

"While the returns are showing the first upswing in the last three elections it is still low," said John Skelton Manukau's electoral officer. "We are obviously looking forward to greater numbers coming through in the last week."

"For those who have not posted their votes by Wednesday we are placing ballot boxes in all Manukau libraries and the Citizen and Customer Centre in Kotuku House. These ballot boxes will be in place until 12.00 noon Saturday 9 October when the election closes."

"The interest in the race for the mayoralty has given the elections a higher profile than previously but people need to remember there is more than one position at stake. Councillors, community boards, licensing trusts and the district health boards all have an impact on the quality of life we share in the area and it is important that voters take this opportunity to ensure their views are represented in decision-making."

"For too long people have said their vote will not make any difference. This statement is simply not true, the only way votes cannot have any value is if they are not used. The election campaign is focused on the reality that residents own this city and they have a very real opportunity to have a say on its future development."

"As an electoral officer it is disappointing to see so many people to let this opportunity pass them by," Mr Skelton said. "It is not too late though voters have until 12.00 noon this Saturday."
