Giant daffodil takes up residence in Hagley Park

MEDIA RELEASE

Giant daffodil takes up residence in Hagley Park woodland

A giant daffodil is attracting even more attention than usual to the spring daffodil display near Hagley Park’s band rotunda.

The three metre high steel sculpture by local artist Raymond Herber was installed in the woodland area last week, following its unplanned appearance there last year.
Friends of Mr Herber, last year, took the sculpture and unbeknown to the artist and Park staff planted it in the woodland.

“It was such a hit that we decided this year to ask Mr Herber to officially install it, for the period that the daffodils are at their peak,” Jeremy Hawker, manager of Christchurch City Council’s botanical services operations team said.

The presence of art in Hagley Park and the Gardens is just one of the subjects that has been raised in public consultation on issues affecting the Park and Gardens, which ends this week. Submissions close this Friday 8 October.

Further information and submission forms are available through the website www.ccc.govt.nz/haveyoursay or from your local city library or service centre.
