Open Day to view changes to Onewa Road

28 October 2004

Open Day to view changes to Onewa Road - Sylvan Avenue intersection

Transit New Zealand and North Shore City will be holding an Open Day for members of the public to view and discuss the intention to remove right-turn changes to and from Onewa Road. The Open Day will be held from 4pm - 8pm on Wednesday November 3, 2004 at the Onepoto Domain Hall, off Sylvan Avenue.

Project Director Clive Fuhr, says the major issue being addressed by this upgrade is safety. "Analysis of the accident data shows that the right turn movement from Sylvan Avenue into Onewa Road has the highest potential for injury accidents at the intersection and resulted in a serious crash in 2003. The right-turn movement into Sylvan Avenue has also resulted in a number of accidents over the years."

Mr Fuhr says the left-turns into and out of Sylvan Avenue will remain. "This will result in less convenient access to and from Sylvan Avenue for some, but will significantly improve the safety of the intersection," he says. On average 45 vehicles per day will lose the right hand turn out of Sylvan Avenue, and 220 will lose the right hand turn into Sylvan Avenue. "Almost 42,000 other vehicles travelling along Onewa Road every day will benefit enormously from the increased safety."

The Onewa interchange upgrade, which begins in 2006 - to coincide with the construction of the Northern Busway - will be completed in 2009. This will have further short and long-term effects on the Sylvan Avenue and Onewa Road intersection. The southbound off-ramp from the Northern Motorway will be closed while it is reconstructed. When this happens, motorists travelling south on the motorway wanting to access Sylvan Avenue will be able to do so via the upgraded Esmonde Road interchange which will then allow an east-west movement from Esmonde Road to Akoranga Drive.

Once the Onewa interchange upgrade is complete, including the widening of the lower section of Onewa Road, there will be an additional lane of traffic in the eastbound direction on Onewa Road.
