New traffic management MacKays Crossing

Wellington Regional Office
Media Release

10 December 2004

New traffic management MacKays Crossing

On Monday 13 December road users will see the installation of new traffic management at MacKays Crossing, 3km north of Paekakariki on State Highway 1, as part of earth moving work for the Mackays Crossing Overbridge project.

“To construct the new northbound on-ramp and overbridge we need to move earth across SH1 at MacKays Crossing,” said Ajay Hardie, Transit’s project manager.

“To make it safe for the trucks to cross the highway we need to slow traffic down to 70km/h and make some changes to the northbound slow lane.”

Mr Hardie said a 70km/h speed restriction would be put in place in the north and southbound lanes from the railway crossing northwards for approximately 1 km. A 50km/h speed restriction over the railway crossing will also be established.

“In addition the northbound slow lane will be closed on this one kilometre section of road to delay overtaking until traffic is clear of the construction zone,” said Mr Hardie.

Mr Hardie said these traffic management measures are expected to be removed for the Christmas period.

“In the New Year a different traffic management system will be implemented that will remain in place until about July 2005.”
