Council accepts donations for Red Cross to help tsunami victims

Christchurch people wanting to help recent tsunami victims can make donations to the Red Cross through the Christchurch City Council civic offices or service centres.

Council spokesman and director of Strategic Investment Bob Lineham says that, like all New Zealanders, Christchurch people are shocked at news unfolding in Asia of the more than 50,000 lives lost and people displaced from their homes along the coasts of Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka and Thailand after an earthquake and tsunami.

“People will want to help, particularly as more news arrives of Kiwis being among the dead. The Council wants to provide a practical means by which many can express their sympathy and concern. “All donations will be handed to the Red Cross to help in its efforts to deliver aid to those worst hit,” Mr Lineham says.

Donations are accepted at: the Council Civic Offices, Tuam Street, from 8.30am to 5pm any week day, except statutory holidays, or at any of seven Council Service Centres at Beckenham, Riccarton, Sockburn, Linwood, Fendalton, Papanui or Shirley, from Wednesday 5 January, 2005, when they re-open for the New Year.

Please note: The Christchurch City Council is only accepting monetary donations for the Red Cross through its Civic Offices and Service Centres.
