Fatal Plane Crash

A light aircraft has crashed in the Queenstown area, killing both people on board.

The Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Wellington detected an emergency locator beacon signal just after mid-day and tasked a rescue helicopter out of Queenstown to track down the beacon.

The helicopter located the crashed aircraft, a single engine Cessna 172 at around 1:30 pm this afternoon. Unfortunately, neither of the occupants survived the crash.

Medical staff and the Police are at the scene.
