City poised to remove illegal billboards

MEDIA RELEASE

Auckland City poised to remove illegal billboards,
asks businesses to avoid using them

Advertisers are being advised to avoid using illegal billboard sites across Auckland city.

This week Auckland City has released a list of approximately 20 sites which have not received council registration and have remained in place despite a request for removal.

The list includes billboards which have been unlawfully established and are illegal because of their size, location, lack of dispensation and/or building consent.

“Billboard and sign regulations exist in Auckland city for a number of reasons,” says incident management team leader, Warren Adler. “One of these is to maintain the visual quality of the city and a pleasant streetscape. This objective sometimes runs hard up against the lucrative outdoor advertising market.”

The usual monthly rental for a city billboard site is $3000. However, this can be as high as $25,000.

“We are making this list available to the advertising industry and media buyers to ensure their clients can make an informed decision about which billboards they choose to advertise on,” says Mr Adler.

“Auckland City is in the process of requesting court authority to remove the illegal billboards, and ask businesses not to support illegal activity by advertising on these sites,” he says.

An illegal billboard was removed from St Lukes Road late last year. If the courts approve, more removals are planned for in the next few weeks.
