City responds to young Aucklanders’ concerns with 80 youth projects

Auckland City’s Community Development and Equity Committee today received a report from officers listing 80 youth projects which aim to make the city a place that young people can embrace and enjoy.

“Auckland City is taking a strong leadership role in ensuring the voices and views of young people are heard,” says chairperson of the Community Development and Equity Committee, Councillor Cathy Casey.

"We are listening to the issues and concerns of the city’s young people and addressing them in policy making across council. Our youth have told us they want to feel safe, and they want the opportunity to display their artistic and musical talents. They also want more say in local and central government decision-making processes. The list of dedicated projects responds to all of these issues,” she says.

There are 19 new projects on this year’s 'things to do' youth project list. Major projects planned include: Auckland City youth council youth awards and 20th anniversary celebration in March 2005 Urban youth summit ‘Converse 05’ in May 2005 focussing on drugs, alcohol and road safety A new youth drop in centre as part of the new Otahuhu Recreation Centre – building starts in April 2005.
