Algal bloom all-clear at Quarry Lake

Water quality at Quarry Lake in Takapuna has returned to a safe level following an algal bloom problem.

North Shore City Council has removed warning signs at the lake, which joins Lake Pupuke, after the latest tests found water quality to be within health guidelines.

Early last month the council's pollution prevention officers were notified of a water discoloration. This was caused by blue-green algae, which can be toxic to humans.

Algal blooms are a naturally occurring event that can be triggered by short bursts of warm weather, but are also affected by other factors such as the amount of nutrients in the water.

Samples from recreational water areas are taken weekly over summer as part of a water monitoring programme involving the local and regional councils and public health service.

People should contact North Shore City Council for general information on bathing water quality, and any health concerns.
