Christchurch must again be supportive of polytechnic – Mayor

Christchurch Mayor Garry Moore is urging the city’s people and institutions to once more “get in behind” the Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT) following its apology this week for last year’s involvement in an electronic learning programme called Cool IT.

Yesterday, the polytechnic’s chief executive, John Scott, apologised and said the affair had disappointed the community.

Mr Moore says it is time for the city to once more support CPIT.

“Everyone makes mistakes from time to time,” Mr Moore says. “The important thing is to acknowledge your mistakes and learn from them. They’ve said ‘sorry’ and have a plan to ensure nothing like this will happen again. It’s time to move on and for the rest of us to get in behind them and support them.”

“They’re getting their act together,” Mr Moore says. “This is the principal tertiary institution in our central city, our most valuable trainer for industry and its continued success is vital to our economy. If we want to keep growing, we need a highly skilled and educated workforce and the polytechnic is crucial to that challenge.”
