Council receives union negotiator assurance – no strike

The Christchurch City Council welcomes an assurance from the Southern Local Government Officers Union that no strike action will take place at this stage. Council General Manager of Human Resources Philippa Jones says the SLGOU has not issued the Council with any notice of strike action and talks with the union negotiating team recommenced this morning, as usual.

“I have every confidence that the progress made by both parties around the negotiating table in the last month will continue, and that we can reach a proposed settlement for union members to consider that enables Council to deliver more effectively for communities,” Ms Jones says.

She assured residents that any strike action, if it took place, would not affect vital city services such as water supply, wastewater reticulation and rubbish collection as many employees servicing these areas were covered by other unions, on individual employment agreements, or the service – like rubbish collection - was contracted out.
