Volunteers receive Youth Council Award

Volunteers receive Youth Council Award for outstanding community efforts

The inaugural Auckland City Youth Council Awards were held at the Town Hall tonight honouring 11 young people who have helped the community.

The awards marked the youth council’s 21st anniversary and were introduced to acknowledge the volunteer work that youth do in Auckland city.

The Mayor of Auckland, Dick Hubbard, presented the awards, given to people aged from 14 to 24.

Nominations came from all over the city and included nominees who had volunteered in a wide variety of organisations such as St Johns cadets, Kidsline and even school education programmes.

Auckland City Youth Council chairperson Pam Mills says it was a long, hard process to decide the recipients of the Youth Volunteer Awards.

“It really was inspiring to discover so many young people contributing to their communities.

“There are a lot of youth in this city who dedicate their time every week to helping people, purely because they want to do some good. We are overjoyed to be able to recognise them,” she says.

Auckland City Youth Council was started in 1984 by the then Mayor of Auckland, Dame Catherine Tizard, so that the voice of youth in New Zealand’s largest city could be heard.

The youth council is involved in important issues and also organises successful events. It is open to all young people who fit its criteria. Meetings are on the third Monday of each month, with project teams meeting again on the fourth Monday of each month.
