Urban growth focus of April Science in the City lecture

Urban Growth Management will be the timely topic of the next Science in the City lecture on Wednesday 27 April, 1.10pm-1.50pm at Our City O-Tautahi, cnr Worcester Boulevard and Oxford Tce.

Ali Memon, Professor of Environmental Management at Lincoln University will talk about some of the key planning issues facing Christchurch today including urban growth on the periphery of the city and the decline of the central business district.

This lecture follows the first public discussion of the Greater Christchurch Urban Development Strategy - a collaborative effort by local councils to manage how Christchurch and surrounding areas develop to accommodate our increasing population.

Professor Memon has had extensive national and international experience in environmental planning and management. He is a member of the New Zealand Planning Institute and was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal in 1994 for his contribution to planning in New Zealand.

Virologist Lance Jennings will be next month's guest speaker in the Science in the City series. "Avian Influenza: Should we be concerned?" will be the subject of his lecture on Wednesday 25 May, 1.10pm-1.50pm at Our City O-Tautahi.

Science in the City is a joint effort by the Canterbury Branch of the Royal Society and the Christchurch City Council to provide free lectures on topical scientific issues, principally for people who work and live in the central city.

Lectures are held on the last Wednesday of each month, starting at 1.10pm.
