Bus to Birkenhead Library

Bus to Birkenhead Library

May 17, 2005

To make it easier for people to get to the temporary Birkenhead Library, North Shore City Council is putting on a free bus.

It will run three times every Wednesday and Friday from the bus stop outside the ASB Bank in Birkenhead Ave to the library's temporary premises at Birkenhead Leisure Centre in Mahara Ave.

North Shore City library services manager, Geoff Chamberlain, says it is important to make getting to the library as easy as possible.

"Books are a big part of many people's lives, and we've been mindful of maintaining our services while the new building is being built," he says.

The council's new Birkenhead Library and Civic Centre will be on Nell Fisher Reserve, where the old library is currently being demolished.

The new centre is expected to open in 2006 and will not only include the library, but the council's area office, Plunket, Citizens Advice Bureau and a café.

"At Birkenhead Leisure Centre the library is open from 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday, and 9.30am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday but there's no late night," says Mr Chamberlain.

People who want to take a bus there can line up at the ASB Bank bus stop in Birkenhead Ave from May 25 on Wednesdays and Fridays at 10am, 10.30am and 11am.

The bus leaves the leisure centre at 10.25am, 10.55am and 11.55am to deliver people back to the ASB Bank bus stop.
