Heritage help is at hand

Heritage help is at hand
May 18, 2005

Help is at hand for projects that enhance North Shore City's historical character and encourage its preservation.

Funded by the North Shore City Council, the North Shore Heritage Trust is offering one-off grants of up to $5,000 towards stabilising, repairing or restoring heritage homes in the city, and towards the preparation of conservation plans and site protection.

Since its establishment in 2002, the Trust has assisted with grants for 23 diverse projects. It is chaired by Bayswater resident Paddy Stafford-Bush and includes North Shore City Councillor Tony Holman.

''The trust is inviting grant applications from individuals or organisations who own or occupy a site or building listed in the city's district plan, or
buildings or sites located in the area which has been zoned for its historical character. We're also interested in hearing from people or groups
pursuing other heritage related projects," says Ms Stafford-Bush.

"The type of projects that we've supported range from the repair of weatherboards and restoration of windows to the restoration of an old windmill structure.

"While the projects we've supported to date have been concentrated in the recognised heritage areas of Devonport and Northcote, we've also provided funding and advice to assist with the preservation of historic buildings in Greenhithe, Takapuna and Long Bay," she says.

Some of the more recent projects to receive a grant include funding the preparation of a conservation plan for the Tongan Methodist Church in Northcote, and the restoration of the bay window on a house in Domain St, Devonport.

The closing date for applications for the current round of grants is Friday, June 10.

If you think you have a project that is eligible for funding, please contact the council's heritage policy advisor, Leslie Vyfhuis, on 486 8600, or email leslie.vyfhuis@northshorecity.govt.nz
