New look for “The Landing”

Better public access to the waterfront and improved facilities for boaties are all part of Auckland City’s draft plans for the area along Tamaki Drive known as “The Landing”.

The draft plans, released for public consultation this week, aim to enhance and improve The Landing, making it more functional and attractive for water sports and recreational users.

The Landing presently features a boat ramp, boat repair yard, clubrooms, boat storage and vehicle parking and caters to all kinds of watercraft from kayaks and waka to catamarans.

It is home to the Royal Akarana Yacht Club (RAYC) as well as the Auckland Sailing Club, Auckland Coastguard, the New Zealand Multihull Yacht Club, Orakei Watersports, Waterwise, Ferg's Kayaks and the Auckland Canoe Club.
Features of the draft plans include:

- consolidation of buildings onsite
- open space areas and walkways
- boat hardstand and storage facilities
- improved access to the water for boaties.

As part of Auckland City's negotiations with developers of the Orakei Marina which is presently under construction, access fees paid to the council will be put towards The Landing redevelopment costs.
The proposal is still in the early stages and the draft concept plan is being developed in association with existing users. Auckland City Council is working with these organisations to identify how they can best be incorporated into the redevelopment.

Two public open days will be held at the Royal Akarana Yacht Club (8 – 10 Tamaki Drive) where people can look at the proposed plans and discuss them with council officers on Saturday 4 and 11 June from 10am to 2pm.

The council's Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee is due to consider a draft concept plan for the site in July 2005.
