Mayor welcomes fans with open arms

The Mayor of Auckland City, Dick Hubbard, is delighted that Lions fans officially have a headquarters after a waterfront location was approved by planning commissioners today.

The Barmy Army Headquarters, at the Viaduct Harbour Marine Village in Halsey Street, will mean Lions fans can enjoy themselves in a safe environment at one location.

“We have worked around the clock to make this happen,” says Mayor Dick Hubbard. “We want our visitors to have a great time while they’re here and we want Aucklanders to soak up the party atmosphere and be proud of our city.”

He says there are a huge number of events lined up over the next few weeks as the city countdowns to the big matches.

“I want everyone to know that Auckland is rising to the challenge. We are an event-friendly city. We can do it for the Lions tour and we can do it for the Rugby World Cup,” he says.
