Council, Board agree on name for leisure centre

Media Release
13th June 2005

Councillors and Community Board agree on name for new leisure centre

Manukau City Council’s Community Development Committee last week approved the name of Manurewa’s new leisure centre, situated at Mountfort Park. The new facility will be named “Manurewa Aquatic Centre – Ngaa mahi a Rehia”.

The name was suggested by the Manurewa Community Board, following consultation with Board members and local Iwi. Rehia is a Maori ancestor who fostered and promoted sports and recreational activities.

When complete, the Centre will provide a range of health and fitness facilities, including:
A 25m x 25m FINA accredited indoor pool
Learn-to-swim pool
Splash Pool
Fitness Centre
Parking and other ancillary facilities

The large pool will also cater to the deep-water requirements for water polo and underwater hockey – two rapidly growing water sports. This will be the first pool in Manukau able to cater for these sports.

The centre will be officially opened by Sir Barry Curtis, Mayor of Manukau, on Saturday 16th July at an activity-packed fun-day with a tropical island theme.
