The Odyssey Rewards Manukau Teens For Reading!

The Odyssey Rewards Manukau Teens For Reading!

Reading for fun takes on a whole new meaning in Manukau Libraries for hundreds of teenagers around the city.

The Odyssey, a teenage reading programme which runs from the 20th June-14th August 2005, rewards teens for reading books of their own choice.

Teens earn points for each book they read from their local library. They can then use these points to win a range of prizes from an Apple IPOD shuffle, DVD players, mobile phones, televisions, stereos, and beauty products.

""We want to make reading more appealing to teens and less like a chore. We want to fuel young people's appetite for good books, to develop their reading skills and literacy through more exposure to books," says Odyssey co-ordinator, Megan Williams.

The Odyssey programme, which originated in Manukau Libraries in 2001, is now running in twelve libraries systems across New Zealand this year.

Over the next eight weeks, teenagers aged 13-17 years can register for The Odyssey by visiting www.manukau-librares.govt.nz or their local library. For more information visit www.theodyssey.co.nz
