Christchurch Mayor to speak at opening of My World exhibition

Christchurch Mayor Garry Moore will this afternoon help open Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu's biennial celebration of the artistic achievements of primary and intermediate school children from throughout Canterbury. My World: Children's Art 05 runs until 7 August. It includes 135 works and showcases the visual art practice of our classrooms, capturing the early stages in the development of the region's future artists. About 60 schools provided works selected by the children and their teachers. The artists were asked to think about their identity, their world and how they saw their place within that world.

Today's opening event runs from 4-5.30pm, with the artists, their parents and teachers invited. The Mayor will speak at about 4.30pm.

"The exhibition highlights the creativity and diversity of the region's young artists," says Christchurch Art Gallery Schools Officer Judith Hoult. "It expresses the visions and reflections of Canterbury children - how they see themselves and the world around them."

Gallery Director Tony Preston says, "The exhibition's part of the Gallery's ongoing programme to promote community participation and learning, and is part of a biennial series that's always been extremely popular with students, their families and indeed, all Gallery visitors."

Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu, corner Worcester Bvd and Montreal St. Admission free, Open daily 10am-5pm, late night Wednesday until 9pm. There is a Council car park underneath, with the entrance off Gloucester St. For more information, the website
