Prince William attends polo champs at West Wave

Prince William will attend a national water polo event at Waitakere City’s West Wave Aquatic Centre.

The 23-year-old water polo-playing prince will officially signal the start of the New Zealand Junior Men’s Water Polo Championship on Saturday 9 July.

The event will be attended by 650 people, mostly players and supporters of water polo, Mayor of Waitakere City Bob Harvey, Patron of New Zealand Water Polo Association – Stephen Tindall and Chairman of New Zealand Water Polo Association – Rob Borgers.

Mayor Harvey says he is delighted to host the Prince during his New Zealand visit. “As a keen water sportsman, and former water polo play I am glad the Prince’s visit has coincided with a national competition. I’m also glad to have the opportunity to show him around New Zealand’s foremost aquatic centre.” Scott Newman, Chief Executive, New Zealand Water Polo Association said it will be a great honour to host Prince William at the tournament.

“Prince William is a fantastic role model and ambassador for the sport and we are just extremely privileged that he is giving us his time to raise the profile of water polo to New Zealand teenagers. Water polo is the fastest growing aquatic sport in New Zealand with 15,000 members,” he says

Prince William has represented Scotland in the Celtic Nations’ water polo tournament against Wales and Ireland and his university as captain.

A Flippa Ball game will start proceedings followed by a demonstration between two New Zealand invitational teams before the main game.
