A splash of mid-winter madness

Get ready to brave the cold and take mid-winter madness to a new level at this year’s Mission Bay Winter Splash.

The annual event on Sunday 10 July is organised by Auckland City, in association with Rotary Auckland East. It will take place at Selwyn Reserve, Mission Bay from 10am to 12.30pm.

People are invited to grab their most outrageous outfit possible then head along for some arctic excitement. There are great prizes for the best fancy dress costume, as well as for the Bell Tea Big Dig which is only $2 to enter.

Sarah Fairhead, Auckland City event organiser, encourages those crazy enough to brave the winter waves to join in the fun.

“The Mission Bay Winter Splash is a highlight in the winter calendar and promises laughter for all. I challenge everyone to take the plunge this year,” she says.

The event commences at 10am with the Bell Tea Big Dig for those under 15 years old. Entrants will dig in the sand for coloured discs to win prizes like a family kayak, Kelly Tarltons passes and many other great vouchers. Proceeds go to Rotary Auckland East.

The official Winter Splash will start at 10.15am, with swimmers taking to the icy Mission Bay waters for some frosty fun.

There will be loads of other free activities for the kids including strolling performers, a mechanical surfboard and a climbing wall.

Register for the swim at 9.30am on the day to win some great spot prizes donated from local businesses such as Fergs Kayaks, De Fontein’s and More FM.
