Auckland’s heritage celebrations set to go ahead

Heritage week celebrations are confirmed for another year following funding approval from Auckland City Council’s combined committees meeting.

Following on from last year’s success, Auckland City is planning a week-long celebration of the city’s heritage from 12 – 18 September this year.

The programme will build on last year’s success and local groups are invited to contact Auckland City with details of their own events to be included in the 2005 calendar.

Throughout the week, heritage enthusiasts can take part in a range of events and tours, free of charge or for a small donation. Planning ideas so far include: Queen Street yarns – send us your oldest memory of Queen Street as it used to be to queenstreetyarns@aucklandcity.govt.nz. The yarns may be incorporated into new artworks that will express the character and experiences of Auckland’s favourite mainstreet tours of the Civic Theatre behind the scenes at the Auckland Art Gallery walking tours of significant heritage trails across the city local heritage church open days, and walks along the heritage Waipapa stream.

This week is part of Auckland City’s long-term campaign to protect heritage areas and buildings, and to encourage the public to celebrate their city’s unique heritage.

“Celebrating Heritage Week again this year is a wonderful opportunity for the city to remember days gone by and take a moment to reflect on the rich and diverse history of Auckland city,” says Councillor Christine Caughey, chairperson of the Environment, Heritage and Urban Form Committee.

“Auckland’s heritage is diverse. Throughout this week, Aucklanders can discover a part of the city they have never seen or learn about Auckland’s founding day, take a walk on an historic volcano or discover some long-lost family history,” says Ms Caughey. “This week can be many things to many people and I hope Aucklanders embrace this significant celebration of yesteryear.”
