Time running out for nominating historic sites

Time running out for nominating historic sites

Time is running out for you to nominate buildings, places and objects you think should be considered for inclusion as Protected Heritage Items in the City Plan.

Current nominations received include the Halswell Domain, an old rope factory site, the Heathcote railway overbridge in Martindales Road, and an early private garage in Somerfield.

Thanks to those who have responded, about 40 places are to be considered for protection in the City Plan, and the Council knows there is much more heritage out there.

Nominations close on Friday, 29 July. Please take a minute to fill out one of the nomination forms available:

- on line on www.ccc.govt.nz/Christchurch/Heritage/News/Consultation.asp

- at your Council service centre,

- or contact Amanda Ross, phone 9416388.

Recent nominations have been very strong on transport heritage. Perhaps there is a police station, post office, kindergarten or even playground in your community that you think the Council Urban Design and Heritage Team should know about.

If you belong to a local history group, now is the time to get together and put forward all of that information you have been collecting about places in your local community.

The Papanui Heritage Group and the New Brighton local history group have taken part in the project, as have the Tramway Historical Society, Friends of Ferrymead Heritage Park and the local branch of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.

Council heritage staff are investigating freezing works, suburban libraries and cemeteries for possible inclusion in the City Plan heritage listings.
