$5 million to widen Fanshawe Street

Work to widen Fanshawe Street is set to begin in October after Auckland City Council awarded the contract at its meeting tonight.

Councillor Richard Simpson, the council’s Transport and Urban Linkages Committee chairperson, says the Fanshawe Street improvements are an important contribution to the Northern Busway and improved access to the CBD.

“The new dedicated busway will run along the existing northern motorway into Auckland’s CBD via Fanshawe Street.”

“Fanshawe Street will be widened to accommodate additional turning lanes, wider bus lanes and bus bays. The works will improve the Beaumont and Halsey Street intersections to the benefit of pedestrians, buses and general traffic.”

“This is a major milestone for the Fanshawe Street works. This gateway to Auckland’s CBD will become better equipped to handle the increasing amounts of traffic using the route,” says Mr Simpson.

Utilities such as electricity and telecommunications have been relocated in readiness for the widening work ensuring traffic disruption is kept to a minimum.

“It is paramount that all works on Fanshawe Street are undertaken efficiently, cost-effectively and are co-ordinated. With over 40,000 vehicles travelling along this route each day, we must minimise disruption.”

The contract was awarded to HEB Contractors Limited based on the lowest tender price.
