Film focus feature of Heritage Week

Classic and archival films are a special feature of this year’s Heritage Week, which will be celebrated in Auckland city from 12 to 18 September.

A major highlight of the week is the Resene classic film evening featuring a special screening of the 1942 film Casablanca, at The Civic, THE EDGE®, on Friday, 16 September.

Tickets are now available, at $18.50 per person, for this special evening which brings to life the memories of an evening out at the Civic as it used to be, singing the national anthem, news reels, intermission and popcorn sold by ‘candy girls’. ‘Jim’ Manley’s film Saga of the Civic Asset, depicting the making of The Civic, will screen several times throughout the week: on Thursday, 15 September at 10am and 12pm, as part of the Civic insiders tours, and at various times on Friday and Saturday as part of The Civic open day celebrations. During these days the theatre will be thrown open for a full range of free tours.

The New Zealand Film Archive is again dusting off some rarely seen news reels from Auckland in the early 1900s through to 1970s. Relive some nostalgic times with a piano accompanist at the weekend screenings at the Auckland Art Gallery’s main auditorium.

The Saturday programme, The Milk and Honey Years, will show ten short films featuring Mrs Roosevelt’s 1943 visit to New Zealand, the Crown Lynn factory, Auckland’s 1962 Arts Festival, Auckland’s Centennial celebrations and the last tram in 1956.

Sunday’s programme, Early Auckland, will show seven short films featuring the ferry Peregrine in 1911, scenes from the 1912 Auckland Cup, and rarely seen footage of Auckland’s Luna Park.

These films will screen at 11am, 12pm and 2pm on each day. Screenings are free of charge and bookings are not required, but seating is limited.

Full heritage week programmes were included in with City Scene on 28 August and addition copies are available from local libraries or from Auckland City Ambassadors.
