Waste wisdom for a happy holiday

Waste wisdom for a happy holiday
September 23, 2005

North Shore City Council is urging its residents to be 'waste wise' over the coming months.

With the festive season not far away, the council is running the 'WasteWise Top 12 Tips Competition', asking residents to share their waste reduction ideas for the holidays. A generous holiday hamper is up for grabs, filled with products from The Ecostore.

The council has also organised a free Smart Shopping course at the Kaipatiki Project Environment Centre on Saturday, October 15, to help consumers make smarter, greener choices; and is running a WasteWise Neighbours free workshop on Saturday, November 5, to promote ways to reduce, reuse and recycle.

Waste minimisation team leader, Bradley Nolan, says the holiday period is a time for giving and sharing, but can also be a time when we consume and waste a vast amount.

"There are many things we can do, however, to reduce the amount we throw away over the holidays," he says.

"For example, it's a good idea to buy gifts which are durable, especially for children - things which break easily very soon end up in the bin. It's also wise to look for gifts with a high recycled content, and it's easy to save that wrapping paper for reuse next year."

Residents wanting to know more, should contact Actionline on 486 8600.

Entries for the competition close on November 30, and should be sent to Waste Minimisation, North Shore City Council, Private Bag 93500, Takapuna.

The free Smart Shopping course will be run at the Kaipatiki Project Environment Centre in Birkdale on Saturday, October 15, from 9am to midday. Bookings should be made by phoning 482 1172 or emailing education@kaipatiki.org.nz

The free WasteWise Neighbours workshop is on Saturday, November 5, from 9am to 3pm at the Channel View Lounge, 3 Gibbons Road, Takapuna. Free parking is available under the library, and morning tea and lunch is included.
