A programme of events celebrating the opening of the Antarctic summer season starts tomorrow, with the laying of a wreath at Sir Robert Falcon Scott’s memorial on Oxford Tce at 10am.

From 2pm, teams will compete at the International Antarctic Centre to pull the Antarctic Hagglund and raise money for the Rainbow Children’s Health Trust. The Antarctic Centre will also present an exhibition of Antarctic clothing, photographs and information in the United States Antarctic Passenger Terminal and from 2pm, readings from writers from the ice, Margaret Mahy and Bernadette Hall.

A wide variety of Antarctica- related events will continue until Sunday 9 October including exhibitions showcasing Antarctica’s stunning landscape; talks on what it’s like to live on the ice and presentations on giant icebergs, scientific discoveries and Antarctica’s rich history.
