New Manager For Mangere Citizens Advice Bureau

Manukau City Council is pleased to announce the appointment of Chris Marr as the new manager of the Mangere Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB).

Chris began work in August and comes with a wealth of experience within the travel and tourism industry. He is currently studying for a law degree and previously worked as a volunteer for the Mangere CAB for 5 years.

Chris says, “These days as our lives have become more complex the role of citizens advice bureaux has evolved to cover a broader range of issues, as well as cater for the changing needs of our diverse communities.

“Earlier this year our office ran a Pacific Island focused Health Information Day emphasizing alternative health methods and the importance of taking personal responsibility for wellness, which was well received.”

Key services offered by the Mangere CAB include a Wednesday evening counselling and legal clinic and a daily Justice of the Peace clinic, as well as information on all aspects of life in New Zealand including: help with consumer problems; advice on setting up a business; dealing with troublesome neighbours; help in finding a doctor/counsellor/childcare centre/support group; and advice on housing/ tenancy and vehicle issues.

In a city which celebrates cultural diversity the Mangere CAB also provides information in other languages and can put residents in touch with speakers of their own language.

Chris says, “More recently we have engaged the services of two Advocates in welfare and consumer matters, who are fluent Tongan speakers. They are available by appointment (no charge) on a Wednesday evening from 4pm for clients needing more hands-on assistance. Clients can schedule up to 2 appointments per week on a first come first served basis and you must phone to book.”

Chris is enthusiastic about his new position serving the public. He reminds us, “We are always looking for more volunteers and welcome enquiries from local residents who are able to give some of their time for this invaluable community service.”
