Airstream – world records, celebrities, fun and a whole lot more
The mighty Manawatu wind will be celebrated, feted and debated over the next two days at the inaugural Airstream Festival in Palmerston North.
The brainchild of Palmerston North City Council, Airstream will include a celebrity debate, a symposium on sustainable energy, all sorts of fun activities in the Square, a special screening of Gone with the Wind, and an attempt to set a new Guinness World Record for the most kites flown simultaneously.
Two of New Zealand’s funniest comedians will lead teams arguing the topic: Energy efficiency – good business or just hot air? at the Regent Theatre, 7pm tomorrow night (14 October). Tickets are $15 available from Ticketdirect 0800 4 ticket (0800 484 235).
Michele A’Court and Raybon Kan will be joined by Massey academics and students in a debate that promises to be both thought-provoking and hilarious.
And if it’s been a while, or you’re one of the rare few NOT to have seen the classic Gone with the Wind, here’s your chance to catch it again on the big screen. A special screening’s being held at 6 o’clock on Saturday (15th of October), again at the Regent Theatre.
Event organiser Melanie Walker says people are invited to dress up for the occasion and practice their best Rhett and Scarlett impressions.
If classic movies aren’t your thing, but kite flying is, then head to Coronation Park at 4pm on Saturday (15 October) to take part in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the most kites flown at the same time.
“To break the world record we need to have 675 kites airborne for at least 30 seconds so we want to have many people as possible along to help us make history,” says Melanie. “It’s BYO kite and it doesn’t matter what kind of kite you have or how big it is, just so long as you can fly it for at least 30 seconds.”
The world record attempt will be held between 4pm and 5pm, and anyone interested in taking part needs to be there at 4pm to sign the official form to ensure the record attempt is considered valid.
