Albatross returns to waterfront

'Flight Trainer for Albatross', a sculpture designed by Auckland-born artist Greer Twiss and gifted to Auckland City by the Auckland City Sculpture Trust, is set to be returned to the waterfront in the next few weeks.

The sculpture was removed by Auckland City from its location on Ports of Auckland land to repair and protect it until a solution could be found to address the damage it was incurring from vehicles accessing the port.

Bollards are being placed on Quay Street and around the sculpture to ensure its protection.

The sculpture will be reinstalled by crane in the next few weeks.

The stainless steel sculpture comprises three large albatross being supported in a flight frame and one at ground level. It stands six metres high and three metres wide.

The artwork has been designed to explore the relationship between land, sea and air and between man and nature. It is also a metaphor for the support needed for endangered birds like the albatross. The sculpture also has links with the boats and activity in the area.
