Ellerslie's future goes interactive

MEDIA RELEASE

28 October 2005

Ellerslie's future goes interactive

Consultation to develop Ellerslie's future framework goes interactive on Saturday, 12 November at a workshop designed to get people thinking about the way Ellerslie might look in the future.

The workshop is the latest in a round of consultation for the project, which started in May 2005. During this time, residents, business and recreational users of Ellerslie have provided feedback on issues affecting them. The workshop is a chance for the community to think more closely about how Ellerslie might look in the future, taking into account feedback received to date.

The launch for the workshop will be on Friday, 11 November 2005 at Christ Church Hall, 169 Ladies Mile, Ellerslie with a discussion during which the results of previous consultation will be outlined.

The workshop itself will take place the next day on Saturday, 12 November 2005 at the same location.

The format will be modelled on a hands-on, interactive design game. The game has been, developed by the Dutch-based architectural and urban design firm S333. Using aerial photographs of the study area as a base, participants make decisions about where commercial and residential development could occur in the future, together with how community facilities such as open space could be provided. Linked to this, improvements needed to transport are taken into account.

The format of the game encourages fresh thinking and produces a variety of options for the form of future development.

The outcomes will feed into scenarios presented back to the community in a discussion document. Further consultation with the community will occur at this time.

Before the workshop, displays outlining the results of consultation to date will be available from 28 October to 14 November at the following locations:

- Ellerslie Recreation Centre

- Ellerslie Business Association

- Remuera Library.

Developing the framework is timely with so much happening in the community and the workshop is a chance to focus on possible outcomes for the area.

Ellerslie's future framework is about managing future development, including coordinating planning around future roading and public transport improvements, open spaces and community facility needs and land use.

It is also an opportunity for the entire Ellerslie community - residents, businesses and the council - to contribute to strengthening and finding a future direction for the area.
