Private property not included in fireworks ban

Auckland City has imposed a fireworks ban along Tamaki Drive. However, the ban does not prevent people letting off fireworks on private property.

"Some residents in the area have called council to complain about the lighting of fireworks in backyards," says Warren Adler, manager service requests, from Auckland City.

"The ban only covers the lighting of fireworks on particular beaches and reserves along Tamaki Drive. It is in place for reasons of public safety and injury prevention during the Guy Fawkes' season, not to control noise. Residents are still allowed to let fireworks off on their private property and in areas not covered by the ban," says Mr Adler.

The ban has been in place since 27 October, and lasts until 30 November 2005. It covers Watene Reserve, Okahu Bay, Orakei Domain, Whenua Rangatira, Michael Joseph Savage Memorial, Selwyn Domain (including Mission Bay beach), Kohimarama Beach, Vellenoweth Green, St Heliers Bay Beach, Ladies Bay and Achilles Point.

Members of the public who let off fireworks in these areas will be asked to move on by council staff and the Police.

A number of public fireworks displays have been organised for Guy Fawkes' night, Saturday, 5 November.
