Pick your preference pay and display to stay

Pay and display parking, based on tariff rather than time control, has been a huge success in Parnell.

The parking management initiative was trialled from 1 June 2005 and involved the main street of Parnell, with 175 car parking spaces managed with 25 Pay and Display machines.

"The trial was to gauge customer response to increased flexibility, and the offer of more choice. People can now choose to park for a time that best meets their needs," says Councillor Richard Simpson, Transport and Urban Linkages Committee chairperson.

"The public's response has been overwhelmingly positive. They found more parks are readily available, and visitors are no longer restricted to one hour to complete their business," says Mr Simpson.

Auckland City will be looking to roll out the scheme to other parts of the city, as they believe it is a key component to enhancing parking management in the city.

Parnell will benefit from the council's introduction of new pay and display technology that accepts text message and credit card payments. This technology is currently being introduced in Auckland's CBD and will reach Parnell before Christmas 2005.
