AUCKLAND CITY COUNCIL

MEDIA RELEASE

Auckland City continues heritage protection efforts

Auckland City Council's commitment to protecting the city's heritage architecture is continuing with a proposal to schedule more buildings and objects in the district plan.

Proposed plan change 194 to the isthmus section of the district plan will schedule nine buildings or objects as category B items.

"The addition of these items to the district plan illustrates Auckland City's continuing efforts to ensure important buildings and objects are preserved for future generations," says Councillor Christine Caughey, chairperson of Auckland City's Environment, Heritage and Urban Form Committee.

"These items are of significant heritage value to the city and we are looking forward to more items such as these being protected as heritage assessment continues," says Councillor Glenda Fryer, chairperson of the Planning and Regulatory Committee.

The buildings or objects proposed for protection are:

St Aidan's Church, 3-9 Ascot Avenue, Remuera

Green Bay Mission Hall, 504-506 Blockhouse Bay Road, Blockhouse Bay

Blockhouse Bay sea wall, 69-79 Endeavour Street, Blockhouse Bay

war memorial obelisks, gates and stone walls, at the entrance to Auckland Normal Intermediate School, Poronui Street, Mt Eden

By scheduling these items as category B items they are given district plan protection against removal, additions or alterations to the building without consent.

At its meeting in June 2004, Auckland City Council budgeted $100,000 for a review of heritage buildings on the isthmus to be undertaken in the 2004/2005 financial year. Public submissions were called for from August to December 2004, with information on numerous buildings received for consideration. While assessment of all the information received is still underway, a number of sites, such as the ones currently proposed for scheduling, have already been considered.

The proposed plan change is available for viewing on www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/isthmusplan or at:
