Otahuhu youth to share recreation ideas with hip-hop artists

This Friday Otahuhu youth will be celebrating the end of the school year with local hip-hop artists and sharing their thoughts on recreation opportunities in their neighbourhood.

>From noon to 4.30pm at Criterion Square in Otahuhu, local youth are invited to bring their moves, words and ideas to an open decks afternoon where they can have their say on recreation programmes for the new Otahuhu Recreation and Youth Centre and local community.

Open decks is an innovative approach to community consultation, involving youth and using music as an expression of ideas and communication.

Hip-hop artists performing on Friday include MR Sick, DJ Porufessor, Ermehn, D Kamali, Savage Poets and Vital Status. The featuring artists are local stars in the Auckland music scene. The artists will call on youth to join them on stage and have their say on recreation and Otahuhu using rap and the spoken word.

The event will be captured on film as a true recollection of the afternoon and of the ideas voiced on the day.

The construction of the new Otahuhu Recreation and Youth Centre, off Mason Ave and Hall Ave, is well underway and should be finished in March 2006. Comments made at the open decks event will influence programme development at the new centre.

A new recreation project planned for youth in Otahuhu is part of the recently launched AkActive programme aimed at increasing Aucklanders participation in physical activity. Suggestions from the open decks afternoon will also be used to develop a programme for young people in Otahuhu.
