Dream job for golfer

Dream job for golfer

The Waahi Taakaro Golf Course in Nelson's Maitai Valley is just 4km from the city - and there's a job opportunity that could be just the thing for an active retired person or for a couple to share.

Right now the Nelson City Council is looking for a contractor to take on the Maitai Golf Shop, in the beautiful setting of the Maitai River valley, surrounded by leafy shade trees where tui, pigeons and kingfishers create an all day chorus.

As a municipal course, Waahi Taakaro is a great opportunity for beginners and novices, but it is not an easy 'chip and putt' course there are narrow fairways and greens that are small targets. The feedback from visitors is that it is surprisingly challenging as well as one of the prettiest courses in the South Island.

The course is laid out so the second nine holes, although played over the same fairways, have different start and finish points, and different angles.

There are 17 distinct holes, each with its own 'personality'; while the 18th is a stand alone green - appropriately named 'Faux Pas' it provides a most challenging finish to any round. Ongoing work at the golf course has made it more user friendly, and the 11th hole has been lengthened and realigned to make it more of a challenge.

* The Waahi Taakaro Golf Course shop is open from 8am-7pm (9am winter), with an honesty box for after hours players.

* Green fees are $13 for 9 holes and $15 for up to18 holes, students $7.

* From November to April the course is open every day (in winter, Saturday is club day.) If you have always wanted to work in a wonderful outdoor environment and have an interest and knowledge of golf this could be your opportunity. The Nelson City Council is keen to receive expressions of interest and a proposal from a keen golfer (or group) to operate the shop and green fee office. There is the opportunity to add to the basic income with sales commission on golf gear and consumables. Find out more from Peter Grundy on 03 5460376.
