Summer season of jazz and classical sounds

Summer season of jazz and classical sounds

Auckland City Music in Parks is bringing you top quality jazz and classical music from 2pm every Sunday at the Auckland Domain band rotunda for the next three months.

The back-to-back Montana Jazz at the Rotunda and Drake Concert Series concerts will feature a range of top musicians including:

Montana Jazz at the Rotunda
The Alibis - a jump swing band whose sound has been influenced by swing and jump blues combos from the 1950s rhythm and blues era and the swing revival of the late 1990s. Their classy, horn-driven swing music and jump blues appeals to music lovers and dancers alike.

Four Sisters - is an exciting vocal group formed by renowned Auckland jazz artist Julie Mason to display the talents of four of this country's leading and emerging women in jazz.

With Trudy Lile, Sarah McCallum and Jenny Eirena, the group features each individual artiste before coming together with some inspiring four-part renditions of standards and original songs.

The Rodger Fox Big Band - will really have the joint jumpin' with great swing classics Zoot Suit Riot, Jump Jive'n'Wall, This Old House, Sing, Sing, Sing, In The Mood, Mambo Swing, I've Got You Under My Skin, Minnie the Moocher, Mr Pinstripe Suit, Rock This Town and many others. It is led by Rodger Fox - New Zealand's top jazz trombonist, bandleader and talented arranger.

Drake Concert Series
Bach Musica New Zealand, a choir and orchestra specialising in music of the Baroque and Classical periods, has been increasingly recognised as one of New Zealand's premier baroque ensemble, whose 1999 recording of the Mozart Requiem and 2000 recording of the Bach St Matthew Passion are regularly featured on Concert FM.

Brass Monkeys is a unique brass ensemble that plays a wide variety of music ranging from renaissance, medieval and popular classical music to ragtime and well known jazz standards.

Back by popular demand this year is seven piece band 'Doch'. Their own inimitable blend of rollicking rhythms, subtle dance grooves and Gypsy cadenzas have gained them a considerable following throughout Australia.

Totally Gourdgeous comprises four of Australia's foremost songwriters, playing together in with their fascinating gourd instruments, wacky humour and extensive musical repertoire.

Auckland City Music in Parks has plenty of music and there is plenty of space to enjoy it in this summer, so grab some food and some friends and head out to one of the city's beautiful parks to enjoy some first class music. Check out www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/mips for more details.

These concerts are produced by Auckland City and sponsored by Montana, Drake New Zealand and Radioworks. They are just some of more than 60 free events provided by Auckland City as part of the Ak@Play summer events programme.

Gordon Campbell: On How National’s ”New” Welfare Plan Resurrects A Past Failure

Sam Uffindell’s defenders keep reminding us that he was only 16 at the time of the King’s College incident, and haven’t we all done things in our teens that, as adults, we look back on with shame and embarrassment? True. Let's be honest. Haven’t we all at one time or another, joined a gang and beaten a smaller, younger kid black and blue with wooden clubs? In that respect, Uffindell’s defenders on the streets of Tauranga risk sounding a bit like the psychiatrist Kargol played by Graham Chapman on Monty Python. Some of the media commentary has also noted how the Uffindell saga has taken the shine off National’s good poll results and distracted us all from the unveiling of an important welfare policy at the recent National Patty conference. OK… So let's put the spotlight back on that welfare policy...
